Do’s and Don’ts After Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Wisdom teeth commonly develop in our early twenties. In a few cases, it serves as a valuable asset to your mouth if aligned strongly and properly. But in several cases, they are not oriented well and need removal. Wisdom tooth extraction is one of the most severe oral surgeries.

After any surgery, the very first thing we need is to let it heal quickly and properly. Below is the list of do’s and don’ts after wisdom tooth extraction.

The Dos

  • Rest –

Relax for at least two to three days, which doesn’t mean you need to be entirely infirm.

  • Elevate your head-

This will reduce your swelling.

  • Use an ice pack for one or two days after the extraction-

This will lessen your pain and minimize your swelling. Use it 15 minutes off and 15 minutes on for around one to two hours time periods.

  • Bite on cotton gauze-

The pressure will help you to stop the bleeding.

  • Keep it clean-

Rinse with a solution of salt water at least once a day.

  • Intake of soft food and liquid for some days-

Try to ingest smoothies, milkshakes, yogurts, smashed potatoes, soups, etc.

  • Chew on the other side-

It’s essential not to trouble the wound in your gum and let it heal.

  • Jaw exercises-

Try opening and closing your mouth slowly. But make sure you must not do this instantly after your extraction.

  • Drink enough fluids, specifically water- but try to avoid straws!
  • Take your medications as prescribed –

Don’t miss out on any of your doses, as it can make it difficult to ease the pain later.

  • Brush tenderly –

Brush gently after the next day of your surgery. But avoid brushing the area of your extraction teeth.

The don’ts

  • Don’t smoke, spit, suck, or drink alcohol-

Staying away from such things will help you to keep up the blood clot that evolves above the extraction area. If the blood clot becomes displaced, you might encounter more pain, and bleeding. And a possible side effect can be formed known as dry sockets.

  • Don’t talk, drink, or eat instantly after the extraction
  • Avoid solid foods-

Try to avoid potato chips, popcorn, and many other crunchy or hard foods for around a week. Avoid carbonated or hot drinks, sodas, spicy foods, etc. According to the doctors, you can intake these foods only after four to five hours of the surgery.

  • Never take an aspirin-

It works as a blood thinner and will detain clot formation.

  • Stop icing after two days of your extraction –

Use hot water on your extraction region after 48 hours. It will speed up healing and ease your pain.

  • Don’t nudge into the gap-

Don’t poke the area with your toothpick, tissue, finger, or tongue. It might slow down your healing. Hence, it may evoke bleeding and can cause dry sockets.

  • Don’t rinse your mouth too vigorously-

The pressure can displace the blood clot and cause severe complications.

How to sleep after the extraction?

Few people might experience more discomfort than others, but almost everyone has some issues. Below are a few ways you can lessen pain while sleeping.

  • Take pain relievers as specified

If the surgeon prescribes you pain relievers, you must take them as advised.

  • Make a comfortable sleeping environment

Keeping your sleeping room cool and dark might help you to sleep. As it can take your mind off the pain.

  • Avoid sleeping on your back

Avoiding sleeping on the back helps you to keep your head sustained on a pillow.

  • Elevate your head while sleeping

You can use an extra pillow to keep your head elevated, which promotes clotting and reduces swelling.

  • Follow your dentist’s instructions

It’s always good to follow your surgeon’s advice and suggestions, as it can help you in reducing discomfort.
